ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has launched a Rs900 million expansion and renovation project for Skardu International Airport to improve passenger facilities and support the growing tourism industry in Gilgit-Baltistan. Officials said the initiative will also prepare the airport for future international flight operations.
According to details, the project includes major upgrades to the terminal building, passenger lounges, check-in counters, parking facilities, and cargo infrastructure. The expansion aims to accommodate rising passenger traffic while enhancing the overall travel experience.
Major Upgrade to Passenger Facilities
The PAA said the terminal building will expand from 21,000 square feet to 39,000 square feet, significantly increasing its operational capacity. Moreover, the departure lounge will accommodate up to 900 passengers, compared with its current capacity of 300.
Similarly, the arrival lounge will be enlarged to handle 200 passengers instead of the existing capacity of 80. Officials said the additional space will help reduce congestion during peak travel periods and improve passenger comfort.
The airport will also receive more check-in facilities. The number of check-in counters will increase from six to 10, allowing faster processing and shorter waiting times for travelers.
Project Aims to Boost Tourism
As part of the development plan, parking capacity will expand from 200 to 600 vehicles to meet the growing demand from visitors. In addition, the project includes the construction of a modern cargo office block to strengthen cargo handling services at the airport.
The Pakistan Airports Authority believes the upgraded infrastructure will encourage more international airlines to operate flights to Skardu. Officials expect the improvements to strengthen tourism and contribute to the economic development of Gilgit-Baltistan by making the region more accessible to domestic and foreign visitors.
PAA spokesperson Saifullah Khan said construction work has entered its initial stage. He added that line marking activities are currently underway before the main development work begins.
The authority said the project reflects its commitment to modernizing airport infrastructure across the country while supporting tourism and regional connectivity. Once completed, the expanded airport is expected to handle a significantly higher number of passengers and play a greater role in promoting Skardu as a leading travel destination.
