More than one million people lined the streets of Madrid on Sunday to welcome Pope Leo during a major public appearance. The pontiff traveled through the Spanish capital in the popemobile before leading an open-air Mass at Cibeles Square.
Crowds waved flags and cheered as Pope Leo made his way along Paseo de la Castellana, one of Madrid’s main avenues. Many supporters shouted “Long live the pope,” while others tossed flower petals as he arrived at the square.
According to the Vatican and local organizers, around 1.2 million people gathered in the square and surrounding streets. The event is expected to be the largest gathering of the pope’s week-long visit to Spain.
Pope Calls for Inclusion and Respect
During a ceremony with city officials, Madrid’s mayor presented Pope Leo with the key to the city. In a guest book, the pope expressed hope that Madrid would remain welcoming and inclusive. He also encouraged residents to build a society guided by genuine human values.
Pope Leo began his visit on Saturday with meetings involving migrants and homeless people. Later, he joined a vigil attended by approximately 600,000 young people in Madrid.
The June 6-12 visit includes stops in Barcelona and the Canary Islands. During the trip, the pope plans to meet migrants who crossed from West Africa in search of safety and better opportunities.
Addressing broader global challenges, Pope Leo urged leaders to respect every human being and avoid policies that divide societies. His message focused on unity, dignity, and social inclusion.
Following the Mass, the pope was scheduled to meet members of his Augustinian religious order. He was also expected to attend an event featuring figures from the worlds of sport, culture, and entertainment in central Madrid.
