Norway Seal First Knockout Victory
Erling Haaland scored a dramatic late winner as Norway defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 in Texas on Tuesday.
The victory sent Norway into the last 16 of the World Cup. It also created a major clash with five-time champions Brazil.
Haaland scored in the 86th minute. The Manchester City striker tapped in from close range after a cross from Patrick Berg. The ball rolled slowly into the net, but the goal carried huge importance.
It was Haaland’s fifth goal of the tournament. It also gave Norway their first knockout victory in World Cup history.
Norway will now face Brazil on Sunday in New Jersey. A place in the quarter-finals will be at stake.
Nusa Scores Stunning Opener
The match started slowly at the air-conditioned home of the Dallas Cowboys.
Both teams were physical, but clear chances were limited in the early stages. Ivory Coast defender Ghislain Konan had one of the first chances after 20 minutes, but he hit the side netting.
Ivory Coast grew into the match through young winger Yan Diomande. He caused problems on the left side and kept Norway’s defence under pressure.
Norway’s big moment came six minutes before half-time.
Captain Martin Odegaard found Antonio Nusa, who cut inside and curled a brilliant shot into the top corner. The goal was one of the best of the tournament.
Odegaard reacted with disbelief after the stunning finish from the 21-year-old winger.
Diallo Equalises Before Haaland Breaks Hearts
Ivory Coast pushed hard after the break.
Nicolas Pepe was denied by Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland, while Ivory Coast continued to win corners and apply pressure.
Manchester United forward Amad Diallo came on after an hour and quickly changed the match.
First, he blocked a Norway effort on the goal line to stop a certain second goal. Then he produced a superb equaliser in the 74th minute after dancing past two challenges inside the box.
Extra time looked likely, but Haaland had the final say.
His late goal broke Ivory Coast hearts and sent Norway through. Nyland then made a flying save from Diallo’s free kick in stoppage time to protect the lead.
Norway’s historic World Cup journey now continues against Brazil.
