The Nuclear Medicine, Oncology and Radiotherapy Institute (NORI) has renewed its call for early breast cancer detection and timely treatment. The institute organised an awareness seminar on Saturday to highlight the importance of diagnosis, comprehensive cancer care and public education.
Held under the theme “Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters,” the event brought together medical professionals, cancer survivors and other participants. Through expert discussions and awareness activities, the seminar encouraged women to seek medical advice promptly and speak openly about breast cancer.
NORI Highlights the Importance of Timely Cancer Care
Begum Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar attended the seminar as the chief guest. During her address, she praised healthcare professionals working across the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission’s (PAEC) network of 21 Atomic Energy Cancer Hospitals.
She acknowledged their dedication to treating cancer patients, including those diagnosed at advanced stages. Moreover, she appreciated their efforts to make cancer care accessible to people who need it.
Sharing a personal experience, she recalled a close friend who received treatment at NORI after a stage IV cancer diagnosis six years ago. Her friend is now living a healthy life, she said, highlighting the importance of cancer treatment and the hospital’s support for patients and their families.
Dr. Shabana Saeed, Director General of Nuclear Medicine and Oncology (NM&O), also urged participants to break the silence surrounding breast cancer. She stressed the need for open conversations and encouraged attendees to share awareness messages with women in their families and communities.
NORI Director Emphasises Early Diagnosis
Earlier, Dr. Humera Mahmood, Director of AECH-NORI, welcomed participants and highlighted the importance of public awareness, early diagnosis and timely treatment. She also drew attention to Pakistan’s breast cancer burden and urged women to consult healthcare professionals without delay.
According to Dr. Humera, PAEC’s network of 21 Atomic Energy Cancer Hospitals provides diagnostic and treatment facilities to a substantial proportion of cancer patients nationwide. She also highlighted NORI’s international recognition as an Anchor Centre under the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Rays of Hope initiative.
NORI Reports Rising Demand for Cancer Services
Dr. Humera reported that NORI registered approximately 11,000 new patients in 2025, compared with around 3,000 in 2007. The figures highlight the growing demand for the institute’s cancer services.
She also outlined the hospital’s advanced treatment facilities, which include three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT), intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), MR-guided hybrid brachytherapy and CyberKnife technology.
Furthermore, NORI operates four simulators and three linear accelerators to support its cancer treatment services. Its CyberKnife facility, which has operated since 2022, has also expanded access to advanced radiation treatment.
Awareness Seminar Features Expert Sessions and Activities
The seminar featured presentations and expert discussions on breast cancer awareness, early diagnosis, timely treatment and compassionate care. Participants also explored informed decision-making and healthy lifestyle choices.
In addition, the programme included a session celebrating paediatric cancer survivors. Medical students from FMDC and NORI specialty registrars presented a performance highlighting that breast cancer is treatable, particularly when detected early.
Organisers also arranged an awareness video, an interactive audience quiz and a poster competition. An awareness walk and visits to breast cancer awareness stalls further encouraged public engagement.
Through such initiatives, PAEC continues to promote cancer awareness and encourage early detection across Pakistan. Its network of 21 Atomic Energy Cancer Hospitals also provides diagnostic and treatment services, supporting efforts to improve access to cancer care nationwide.
