A newborn baby has reportedly gone missing from Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) in Peshawar, with the family and police providing different accounts of the incident.
The baby’s father, Hasmat Ali, a resident of Charsadda’s Shabqadar area, said his child was born at the hospital a day before the incident.
He alleged that hospital staff asked female relatives to leave the gynaecology ward. When they returned, the newborn was reportedly no longer there.
Ali said a daily diary report was registered at the hospital’s police post, but police had not registered a first information report. He also claimed a nurse accused the family of making the baby disappear.
However, police presented a different account. Officials said the baby’s mother voluntarily handed the newborn to a woman wearing a white burqa. According to police, the woman remained in the gynaecology ward for nearly three hours, while the baby’s maternal aunt was also present.
Police said the mother declined to register a complaint, describing the matter as a personal family issue.
An LRH spokesperson said an internal inquiry was underway and police were investigating the incident. Authorities expressed hope that those involved would be traced.
Meanwhile, CCTV footage obtained by Geo News reportedly shows a woman carrying the newborn out of the hospital.
