New York City is introducing a major affordability initiative for football fans ahead of this summerโs FIFA World Cup matches in nearby New Jersey. City officials announced that residents will have the opportunity to purchase limited World Cup tickets for only $50 through a special lottery system designed to help working families attend the global sporting event.
The announcement was made on Thursday by Zohran Mamdani during a press conference held in Harlem. Officials said the discounted ticket program aims to ensure local communities are not excluded from one of the worldโs largest sporting tournaments due to rising ticket costs.
The city plans to release 1,000 affordable tickets covering several World Cup matches scheduled to take place at the stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The initiative also includes free round-trip bus transportation for all ticket winners.
Lottery System Introduced to Stop Ticket Scalping
According to city officials, residents can begin entering the lottery starting May 25. The selected winners will gain the right to purchase up to two tickets each at the reduced $50 price.
The affordable tickets will be distributed across five group-stage matches and two knockout games. Around 150 tickets will be available for each match included in the program.
Authorities said strict rules will apply to prevent ticket reselling and illegal price inflation. The tickets will be non-transferable and handed directly to winners at designated bus boarding locations before departure to the stadium.
Officials believe the system will help genuine football fans attend the tournament instead of ticket resellers profiting from the event.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani emphasized the importance of making international sports accessible for ordinary residents. During his remarks, he stated that working people who helped build the culture of football should not be excluded because of expensive ticket prices.
He also joked that the $50 ticket price was equal to the cost of five coffees in New York City, highlighting the extremely high prices many fans currently face in the resale market.
Rising World Cup Ticket Prices Spark Public Debate
Ticket affordability has become a major concern surrounding the upcoming FIFA World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Fans across several host cities have criticized the sharp rise in resale prices for popular matches.
According to data from TicketData, the average entry-level resale ticket for a group-stage match in the New York area recently reached approximately $864. Some tickets listed on resale platforms have climbed into the thousands of dollars.
The most expensive seats for the World Cup final scheduled for July 19 in New Jersey were reportedly listed for nearly $33,000.
The growing prices have triggered debates about accessibility and fairness. Critics argue that many local fans are being pushed out of the tournament because of commercial resale activity and premium pricing strategies.
Despite criticism, Gianni Infantino defended the tournamentโs pricing structure earlier this month. FIFA officials maintain that high demand and global interest are driving ticket values.
City Leaders Push for Inclusive Sports Experience
New York City leaders say the affordable ticket initiative reflects a broader commitment to inclusion and equal access to major events. Officials hope the program will allow residents from different economic backgrounds to experience the excitement of the World Cup firsthand.
Yusef Salaam also supported the initiative and stressed the importance of making sure communities feel included during major international celebrations.
City representatives added that transportation support was included to reduce additional travel expenses for residents attending matches in New Jersey.
The lottery system is expected to attract thousands of applicants once registration officially opens later this month. Organizers say the response already highlights the strong demand for affordable sports entertainment in one of the worldโs most expensive cities.
