The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved a reduction of Rs1.98 per unit in electricity tariffs under the first quarterly adjustment of 2026. However, consumers will receive a net relief of only Re0.80 per unit in June bills after the application of a Rs1.19 fuel charge adjustment.
Tariff reduction and quarterly impact
Nepra announced that the Rs1.98 per unit reduction will apply for three months. The relief will cover the June, July, and August billing cycles. Officials estimate that the decision will provide consumers with relief exceeding Rs67 billion during this period.
Moreover, the regulator applied the adjustment across the country, including consumers of K-Electric. However, the notification clearly excluded lifeline consumers from the revised tariff structure. Nepra said the decision aims to pass on efficiency gains while maintaining financial discipline in the power sector.
Fuel charge adjustment offsets relief
At the same time, Nepra approved a Rs1.19 per unit increase under the April 2026 fuel charge adjustment. As a result, electricity bills issued in June will reflect both the reduction and the increase. Therefore, consumers will see a net decrease of Re0.80 per unit.
According to the notification, the fuel charge adjustment also applies nationwide, including Karachi. The regulator stated that the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) had requested a higher increase of Rs1.73 per unit. However, Nepra reviewed the submitted data and approved a lower hike of Rs1.19 per unit.
Officials said the move balances consumer relief with the need to recover fuel costs. Meanwhile, energy analysts noted that while the quarterly cut offers short-term relief, fuel adjustments continue to limit the overall impact on household bills.
