ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority’s National Emergency Operations Centre has warned of possible flooding across Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds are forecast during the next 72 hours.
Authorities have been directed to remain on high alert and take preventive measures in vulnerable areas.
According to the alert, intense rainfall in mountainous regions could rapidly increase water levels in rivers, streams and seasonal nullahs. Moreover, landslides, debris flows and flash floods may threaten communities and transport routes.
Northern Districts Face Flash Flood and Landslide Risk
Gilgit, Diamer, Ghizer, Hunza, Astore, Skardu and Shigar face possible sudden flooding, while Bagh, Poonch, Muzaffarabad, Haveli, Bhimber, Sudhanoti, Mirpur and Kotli remain vulnerable in AJK.
Meanwhile, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Bajaur, Mohmand, Shangla, Battagram, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad and Haripur may also experience flash flooding.
The weather system could additionally trigger urban flooding in Peshawar, Nowshera, Swabi and Mardan.
River Flows Expected to Rise Across Several Regions
The NDMA forecast increased flows in the Indus, Kabul, Swat, Panjkora, Kurram, Tochi, Jhelum, Chenab and Ravi rivers.
Furthermore, rainfall could significantly increase the flow of Nullah Lai in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, putting low-lying neighbourhoods at risk.
Local administrations have been instructed to pre-position essential resources and prepare evacuation arrangements.
The NDMA also advised residents and tourists to avoid riverbanks, streams, flooded roads and unnecessary travel during heavy rain.
Additionally, travellers should monitor official weather forecasts, road closures and district administration instructions.
The authority warned people against crossing fast-moving water on foot or in vehicles and advised citizens to use the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert app for updates. In emergencies, people should dial 911 for assistance.
