Bangkok authorities declared a flood disaster across all 50 districts on Saturday after heavy rain caused widespread flooding. The rain continued for a third consecutive day, while officials warned that more rainfall could worsen conditions.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said almost 300 millimetres of rain had fallen since Thursday afternoon. As a result, rising water flooded roads, homes, restaurants and areas near the city’s canals.
Heavy Rain Causes Widespread Flooding
Residents reported severe flooding in several parts of the capital as water levels continued rising. In some areas, residents waded through knee-high water while others filled sandbags to protect their homes.
A local vendor near a canal said floodwater had reached waist level around her home. She also said the current flooding appeared worse than the devastating 2011 floods, which killed more than 500 people.
Meanwhile, Bangkok’s eastern areas faced the greatest impact from the continuing rainfall. Chadchart said authorities were pumping water from affected areas, but many canals had already reached full capacity.
Officials Issue Safety Warnings
The governor urged residents living near canals to remain cautious as water levels continued rising. He also advised bedridden patients using life-saving medical equipment to consider temporary hospital stays.
Furthermore, officials asked residents to move their vehicles to higher ground to prevent flood damage. Bangkok’s public transport authority offered free MRT park-and-ride spaces for vehicle storage until October 2.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation warned that low pressure would affect eastern, northeastern and central Thailand until Sunday. Authorities also warned of possible flash floods, forest runoff, mudslides and river overflows.
Officials continue monitoring rainfall and water levels across Bangkok. Residents in vulnerable areas have been urged to follow safety instructions as heavy rain remains possible.
