Sindh Introduces Two-Month Free Pink Bus Service Initiative

Free Pink Bus Service

The Sindh government has made a significant announcement regarding the Pink Bus service, offering free rides for women over a two-month period as part of an initiative to promote the use of public transportation.

Speaking at an event in Karachi to mark the inauguration of two new routes for the women-only service, Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon highlighted the global recognition received by the Pink Bus service.

The newly introduced routes, R3 and R9, will extend from Power House to Korangi and from Gulshan Hadeed to Tower, respectively. Each route will be served by a fleet of at least five buses.

Previously, the Pink Bus service, consisting of 18 vehicles, operated on three main routes covering Model Colony to Merewether Tower, North Karachi to Korangi, and Numaish Chowrangi to Sea View Beach.

The initiative is part of the Sindh Peoples Intra District Project, a collaboration between the Government of Sindh and the National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation.

While the latter oversees the maintenance and operations of the buses and depots, the government provides subsidies and logistical support to ensure the project’s smooth operation.

Minister Memon emphasized the pioneering nature of the Pink Bus service, noting its absence elsewhere in the world.

He also mentioned the opportunity for women to drive the buses, highlighting the service’s commitment to gender inclusivity.

MPA Faryal Talpur commended the Pink Bus service for addressing the transportation needs of women, especially in a conventional bus service that often lacks adequate space for female passengers.

She underscored the importance of gender equality in the workforce and expressed the government’s commitment to providing quality transportation services to the public.

Talpur further advocated for the elimination of fares for women, emphasizing the government’s dedication to enhancing accessibility and affordability in public transportation for all citizens.
