TEHRAN: Jailed Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi remains in critical condition in a cardiac care unit in northwestern Iran after being transferred from prison to hospital, according to a statement from her family-run foundation on Sunday.
The foundation said her blood pressure continues to fluctuate dangerously. Meanwhile, doctors have limited treatment to stabilising measures, including oxygen therapy, as her condition remains unstable.
Mohammadi was moved from prison in Zanjan on Friday after what the foundation described as a catastrophic deterioration in her health. Additionally, she reportedly experienced two episodes of complete loss of consciousness and a severe cardiac crisis before the transfer.
Earlier, her family said she suffered a suspected heart attack in late March, further worsening concerns about her medical condition. Consequently, her supporters have renewed calls for urgent and specialised care.
The Narges Mohammadi Foundation stated that effective treatment is only possible if she is transferred to her medical team in Tehran. However, no official confirmation has been given regarding such a move.
Mohammadi, who is in her fifties, received the Nobel Peace Prize while serving prison sentences for campaigning for womenโs rights and opposing the death penalty in Iran. Moreover, she has remained a prominent critic of state policies despite repeated arrests.
In February, her foundation reported that she had been sentenced to an additional seven and a half years in prison. Shortly afterward, international human rights groups and the Nobel Committee called for her immediate release.
She was detained in December after making remarks at a memorial service for lawyer Khosrow Alikordi. Authorities accused her of delivering provocative statements during the event, leading to her arrest.
