Russian Air Defences Intercept Dozens of Drones Overnight
MOSCOW: Russian authorities said early Thursday that air defence systems repelled a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack targeting the Russian capital, with several drones reportedly reaching a major oil refinery in Moscow.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin stated that air defence forces remained engaged throughout the night as they intercepted multiple unmanned aerial vehicles approaching the city.
According to Sobyanin, several drones managed to reach the Moscow Oil Refinery (MNPZ), one of the capitalโs key energy facilities. However, officials did not immediately confirm whether the refinery sustained any significant damage.
Authorities said emergency and response teams were deployed to assess the situation and manage any consequences resulting from the incident.
Meanwhile, Russian air defence units reportedly destroyed 43 drones during the overnight operation, preventing a larger impact on critical infrastructure and populated areas.
Energy Infrastructure Remains Key Target
The latest strike highlights Ukraineโs continuing focus on Russian energy facilities as part of its broader strategy to disrupt fuel production and reduce revenues linked to Moscowโs military operations.
Over recent months, Ukrainian forces have intensified long-range drone attacks against oil-processing facilities, storage sites, and export hubs across Russia.
Earlier this week, another Ukrainian drone attack reportedly sparked a fire at a major refinery near Moscow and caused damage to infrastructure. However, authorities have not confirmed whether Thursdayโs attack targeted the same facility.
Conflict Continues Amid Diplomatic Stalemate
Furthermore, the latest exchange underscores the ongoing intensity of the conflict, which has entered its fifth year. While diplomatic efforts have continued, progress toward a negotiated settlement remains limited.
Russia has continued launching regular missile and drone strikes against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure since the war began in 2022. In response, Ukraine has expanded its long-range strike capabilities and increasingly targeted military and energy assets deep inside Russian territory.
As both sides maintain aerial operations, concerns remain over further escalation and the growing impact of attacks on critical infrastructure across the region.
