Morocco secured a dramatic place in the FIFA World Cup last 16 after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in a penalty shootout on Monday, following a gripping 1-1 draw after extra time in Monterrey.
The Atlas Lions forced penalties through Issa Diop’s stoppage-time equaliser before Ismael Saibari calmly converted the decisive spot-kick. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou played a pivotal role by saving Crysencio Summerville’s penalty, helping Morocco clinch a memorable victory and set up a last-16 meeting with co-hosts Canada.
The shootout featured several twists. Neil El Aynaoui and Dutch substitute Justin Kluivert both missed early attempts, while Bart Verbruggen appeared to stop Soufiane Rahimi’s penalty before the ball slipped over the line. Quinten Timber then fired wide, Achraf Hakimi struck the post, and Saibari eventually sealed Morocco’s progression.
Late resilience overturns Dutch advantage
The Netherlands took the lead in the 72nd minute through Cody Gakpo, who finished clinically after Crysencio Summerville created the opportunity. Gakpo became emotional after scoring, with teammates gathering to support him following a recent personal tragedy.
Despite falling behind, Morocco continued attacking relentlessly. Their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time when substitute Chemsdine Talbi delivered a precise cross for Diop, whose powerful header forced extra time.
Bounou and Verbruggen shine in memorable contest
Both goalkeepers produced outstanding performances throughout the match. Verbruggen denied Ayoub Bouaddi, Neil El Aynaoui and Hakimi on multiple occasions, while Bounou made crucial saves to keep Morocco in contention.
Thousands of Moroccan supporters celebrated wildly after the final whistle, joined by many local fans who backed the Atlas Lions throughout the evening. Morocco will now face Canada in Houston on Saturday, aiming to extend their impressive World Cup journey and continue their remarkable knockout-stage campaign.
