Morocco recovered twice from behind to defeat Haiti 4-2 in an entertaining World Cup Group C clash in Atlanta on Wednesday. However, the victory was not enough to secure top spot in the group.
The North Africans finished second to Brazil on goal difference and will now travel to Monterrey for a likely last-32 meeting with either the Netherlands or Japan on Monday.
Haiti made a bright start and stunned Morocco after just 10 minutes. Jean-Kevin Duverne delivered a cross from the by-line, and Lenny Joseph’s effort deflected off goalkeeper Yassine Bounou into the net.
The goal ended Haiti’s 52-year wait for a World Cup goal. Moreover, it sparked celebrations among thousands of Haitian supporters inside the stadium.
Morocco responded strongly through captain Achraf Hakimi. The defender scored after goalkeeper Johny Placide failed to hold Bilal El Khannouss’ powerful strike.
Nevertheless, Haiti regained the lead only four minutes later. Wilson Isidor produced a spectacular finish that left the Moroccan defense with no chance.
Morocco once again fought back before halftime. Ismael Saibari continued his impressive tournament form by scoring his third goal in as many World Cup matches.
The second half remained highly competitive as both teams searched for another breakthrough. Eventually, Soufiane Rahimi put Morocco ahead for the first time. His deflected effort flew into the top corner and left him visibly emotional.
Thereafter, Morocco controlled the closing stages and created several dangerous opportunities. Gessime Yassine then added a fourth goal to secure the victory and complete the comeback.
Although Haiti exited the tournament without a point, the team earned praise for its spirited performances. The Caribbean side had already suffered defeats against Scotland and Brazil.
After the match, striker Wilson Isidor expressed pride in Haiti’s display. He said the squad showed promise and remained confident about returning to a future World Cup to earn the nation’s first point on football’s biggest stage.
