A song by exiled Russian singer Monetochka has been removed from unofficial screenings of Hollywood blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day in Russia.
Russian outlet Ostorozhno Novosti reported that cinemas replaced her song “Monopoly” with instrumental music during a scene set in New York’s Brighton Beach.
The singer’s name was also reportedly removed from the film’s ending music credits.
Song removed after Ukraine decision
The development follows a similar decision by Ukrainian distributors, who removed the track from the film’s Ukrainian release.
Moviegoers in Ukraine reportedly complained about the singer’s inclusion in the soundtrack.
Monetochka fled Russia following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine and has since remained outside the country.
Russian authorities later designated her as a “foreign agent.”
Film lacks official Russian release
Like several major Western productions, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has not received an official theatrical release in Russia.
Sony Pictures suspended its Russian operations following the invasion of Ukraine.
However, Russian cinemas have reportedly begun screening unofficial copies of the film.
The removals highlight the continuing impact of political tensions on cultural content linked to Russian artists.
Meanwhile, Monetochka received a Nobel Peace Prize nomination in 2025 after launching a charitable initiative supporting Ukrainian refugees.
Her song’s removal from the film in both countries reflects the growing scrutiny surrounding artists associated with the conflict.
