US first lady reappears at White House event after month-long absence that fueled media attention over her reduced public schedule
WASHINGTON: US First Lady Melania Trump returned to the public spotlight on Thursday after about a month away, joking about the widespread attention surrounding her absence from official events.
“Good afternoon. I heard you missed me. Here I am,” Melania said with a chuckle while opening an event in the White House Rose Garden.
President Donald Trump accompanied his wife from the Oval Office to the event, with the couple holding hands before reaching the podium. The president then joined the audience as Melania delivered her remarks.
The event highlighted a donation from IndyCar and Fox Corporation to finance university scholarships ahead of an IndyCar race through Washington marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Month-Long Absence Draws Media Attention
However, Melania’s appearance attracted particular attention because she had not attended a public event since the FIFA World Cup final on July 19.
The 56-year-old first lady also missed several prominent engagements, including the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner on July 24.
Moreover, NBC reported this week that Melania has maintained a significantly lower public profile during her husband’s second term, appearing at roughly half as many public events as she had at the comparable stage of his first presidency.
Her lighthearted opening remarks appeared to acknowledge the speculation surrounding her absence.
Return Comes Amid Scrutiny Over Trump Aide
Meanwhile, Melania’s reappearance coincided with separate political attention surrounding Trump’s executive assistant, Natalie Harp.
The White House recently rejected criticism after questions emerged about Harp accompanying the president during a security-related transfer from Air Force One in Türkiye.
Harp has maintained a highly visible role alongside Trump during his second term, frequently assisting with information and social media material.
However, she did not appear to attend Thursday’s Rose Garden ceremony.
Melania, meanwhile, offered no detailed explanation for her recent absence, instead using humor to mark her return to official public duties.
