PDM protests ‘biased’ judiciary, demands restoration of its dignity

PDM calls off sit-in outside Supreme Court after day-long protest

The ruling Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) called off the sit-in staged outside the Supreme Court on Monday evening, after a dawn-to-dusk “peaceful” dharna in Islamabad. The protest was organized to demonstrate against the judiciary for “facilitating” Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan.

PDM protests 'biased' judiciary, demands restoration of its dignity

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, the chief of the Pakistan Democratic Movement coalition, stated that sacrificing some judges is necessary for the dignity of the judiciary and that it would make no difference.

While addressing protesters at a sit-in in Islamabad on Monday, the leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), Maulana Fazlur Rehman, stated that the country’s decisions would not be made in the building in front of them. He further added that restoring the dignity of Pakistan’s judiciary was their goal.

The JUI-F chief addressed a massive crowd gathered to protest against the conduct of judges of the superior judiciary, especially Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umra Ata Bandial, and said that the people will now make the country’s decisions, adding that “biased” judges have hurt their own reputation.

“People sitting on esteemed chairs cannot be allowed to disrespect Parliament and the people. If politicians are insulted, then our hammer is heavier than yours,”

he said

“We reject your bullying. It is totally unacceptable to us,” he added.

Earlier in the evening, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, accompanied by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Chief Organiser and Vice President Maryam Nawaz, arrived at the venue of the protest demonstration.

The PDM alliance, of which JUI-F and PML-N are key members, had announced a sit-in outside the Supreme Court building in the federal capital to protest against what they deem the judiciary’s preferential treatment of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan.

PDM President Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who is also chief of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), made the announcement while addressing a large number of participants of the sit-in outside the apex court in the federal capital, calling off the sit-in staged outside the Supreme Court to protest against the judiciary for “facilitating” Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, after a dawn-to-dusk “peaceful” dharna in Islamabad on Monday evening.

Despite Section 144 still being in effect in the capital city, workers and supporters of the JUI-F, along with multi-party protesters from different areas of the country, converged on Islamabad and many entered the Red Zone.

On Friday, Maulana Fazl announced that they would stage a sit-in outside the Supreme Court against Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial for facilitating Khan.

The federal government had requested the PDM, a ruling alliance of multiple parties, to change the venue of the sit-in due to security concerns. However, the chief of PDM, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, refused to change the decision and organized a protest demonstration of thousands of workers outside the top court.
