Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds swept across several parts of Lahore on Sunday. Consequently, the city administration activated emergency measures to manage the situation and reduce the risk of urban flooding.
Officials placed multiple government departments on high alert. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department forecast more rainfall over the next 24 hours, prompting authorities to strengthen preparedness across the city.
Emergency Teams Deployed Across Lahore
Following the downpour, Lahore Commissioner Noman Yousaf directed emergency response teams to remain active in the field.
Teams from the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), the Metropolitan Corporation Lahore (MCL), and the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) were instructed to continue operations throughout the affected areas.
In addition, Assistant Commissioners received directions to personally supervise drainage work within their respective tehsils. Their primary responsibility is to keep major roads and underpasses free from standing water.
Furthermore, teams from the Central Business District (CBD) and RODA were also placed on high alert to respond quickly if conditions worsen.
Authorities Focus on Preventing Urban Flooding
The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported the city’s temperature at 28 degrees Celsius. It also recorded wind speeds reaching 20 kilometres per hour.
However, weather officials warned that additional rainfall is expected during the next 24 hours. Therefore, authorities intensified preventive measures across Lahore.
The commissioner ordered disposal stations in areas affected by power outages to switch immediately to generator backup. This step aims to keep water pumps running without interruption.
Moreover, WASA town directors were instructed to closely monitor pumping stations and ensure drainage systems remain fully operational.
Rain Affects Traffic on Major Motorways
The changing weather also disrupted travel on several motorway sections across Punjab.
According to the Motorway Police, rainfall was reported on the M-2 Motorway between Kot Momin and Thokar Niaz Baig.
Similarly, showers affected the Lahore-Sialkot Motorway from the main toll plaza to Sambrial.
Meanwhile, cloudy weather continued along the M-3 Motorway between Faizpur and Nankana.
As road conditions became slippery, officials urged motorists to remain extra cautious while travelling.
Motorway Police Issue Safety Advisory
The Motorway Police advised drivers to reduce speed and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
Additionally, motorists should avoid unnecessary overtaking and sudden braking during wet weather.
Officials also stressed the importance of checking that headlights and windscreen wipers are functioning properly before travelling.
Furthermore, drivers should follow lane discipline and wear seatbelts throughout their journey to minimise risks.
In case of any emergency, motorists have been advised to contact the Motorway Police helpline at 130.
Authorities Remain Prepared for More Rain
With more rainfall expected, government agencies continue monitoring the situation across Lahore.
Emergency teams remain deployed in vulnerable areas. At the same time, drainage operations are underway to keep roads open and reduce the chances of urban flooding.
Authorities have urged residents and commuters to stay informed about weather conditions and exercise caution until the spell of rain subsides.
