Pakistan Airports Authority cites increased bird activity as precautionary measure
The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has announced that both runways at Lahoreโs Allama Iqbal International Airport will remain closed to scheduled commercial flights for three hours each morning from July 5 to September 15 as part of enhanced aviation safety measures during the monsoon season.
According to the PAA, runway operations will be suspended daily between 5:00am and 8:00am, when bird activity around the airport is expected to reach its highest level. The authority explained that the temporary restriction aims to reduce the risk of bird strikes during aircraft take-offs and landings, particularly below an altitude of 3,000 feet.
Officials emphasised that scheduled commercial flights will continue to operate outside the restricted hours, while emergency landings will be accommodated whenever required.
Pilots and airlines advised to take additional safety precautions
The PAA said pilots have been instructed to exercise heightened caution during approach and departure procedures because bird activity typically increases significantly during the monsoon months. Airlines have also been directed to carry sufficient fuel to account for any possible ground or airborne holding resulting from operational adjustments.
A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has already been issued to inform airlines, pilots and aviation stakeholders about the temporary operational changes.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest aviation safety standards while minimising disruption for passengers and airline operators. Officials said the precautionary measures were introduced after assessing seasonal risks associated with increased bird movement around the airport.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast a fresh spell of monsoon rains beginning in the first week of July. Lahore is expected to receive rainfall from July 1 to July 6, with weather experts warning that seasonal conditions could increase bird activity near airports and surrounding areas.
The temporary runway closures form part of broader aviation safety protocols implemented during the monsoon season to ensure safe flight operations while reducing potential hazards for aircraft operating in and out of Lahore.
