Peshawar โ Chief Minister Mohammad Sohail Afridi has indicated plans to revive student unions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, emphasizing their role in strengthening democratic participation and cultivating future leadership. He shared these remarks during a high-level meeting of the labour department focused on welfare reforms and institutional improvements.
Student engagement linked to democratic development
Afridi stated that restoring student unions would provide structured platforms for young people to engage in constructive political discourse. As a result, students would gain leadership experience while contributing to democratic processes. Officials confirmed that the provincial assembly has already passed a resolution supporting the initiative.
Moreover, authorities have formed a dedicated committee to draft recommendations. Afterward, the government plans to develop a balanced code of conduct in consultation with key stakeholders. In addition, lawmakers intend to introduce formal legislation to define the structure, responsibilities, and regulatory framework of student unions across the province.
Labour reforms progress alongside education initiatives
Meanwhile, the meeting also addressed labour welfare measures aimed at improving workersโ rights. Afridi directed officials to strengthen the social security registration system to ensure compliance with minimum wage laws. Consequently, authorities reported that initial labour registration targets have already been achieved ahead of schedule, with further progress expected soon.
Furthermore, participants approved plans to increase the number of labour courts and accelerate the distribution of residential flats for workers in Peshawar. These steps aim to enhance access to justice and improve living conditions for labourers.
Overall, the governmentโs approach combines youth empowerment with labour reforms, reflecting a broader strategy to improve governance, institutional capacity, and inclusive development across the province.
