Losing a mobile phone can create both financial and security concerns, especially when the device falls into the wrong hands. However, users can block lost, stolen or snatched phones through the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s system.
The process is managed through PTA’s Lost and Stolen Device System (LSDS). Users can submit complaints through the PTA Complaint Management System app on Android and iOS or through its online complaint portal.
How to Block a Lost or Stolen Phone
To request a device block, applicants must provide several details about themselves and the missing handset.
These include the applicant’s name, father’s name, CNIC number, city and mobile number. The mobile number must have been used in the missing phone during the previous six months.
Applicants must also provide the handset’s IMEI number, brand, model and colour. In addition, the complaint requires the reason, location and date of the incident.
An email address, postal address and FIR number can be provided optionally.
The SIM used in the missing handset must be registered against the complainant’s CNIC. PTA will not process a blocking request if the phone has never been used with a Pakistani SIM.
Furthermore, the required OTP is sent to the SIM that was used in the missing handset.
For PTA-approved phones with dual IMEIs, blocking one IMEI will automatically block the second one. This applies even when only one SIM slot was being used.
If the IMEI and mobile number information does not match, users must provide matching details. They can then submit the complaint again.
Users who cannot file complaints online can contact the PTA helpline at 0800-55055. Alternatively, they can visit their nearest PTA office.
Importantly, phones lost months or even years earlier can still be blocked. However, owners must have the correct IMEI and other required information.
How to Check an IMEI Status
Users can also check the status of an IMEI through several available methods. They can send the IMEI number to 8484 for verification.
Alternatively, they can use the DIRBS website or the Device Verification System app.
Once PTA blocks a handset, it cannot operate on any mobile network in Pakistan.
However, the LSDS only blocks the device and does not recover stolen or missing phones. Therefore, owners must contact the police or the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee for recovery assistance.
How to Unblock a Recovered Phone
The process changes when a blocked handset is recovered. Only the person who originally requested the blocking can apply to have the device unblocked.
The applicant must submit an unblocking request through the complaint system. They also need the original complaint reference number and CNIC.
After completing the required verification, PTA said the handset’s IMEI is expected to be unblocked within 24 hours.
This allows users to restore network access to a recovered phone after completing the required verification process.
