Bride’s simple attire and rejection of lavish bridal customs fuel discussion on rising wedding costs
KERALA: A Kerala-based content creator has ignited a nationwide conversation on social media after choosing an unusually simple wedding ceremony that challenged conventional expectations surrounding Indian marriages.
Harsha Pathu, also known as Fathima Harsha, recently married Nasim Mohammed in a ceremony that attracted widespread attention for its minimalist approach rather than lavish celebrations. The illustrator, makeup artist and henna artist deliberately rejected many traditional bridal customs, choosing comfort and simplicity over elaborate displays.
Instead of wearing heavy gold jewellery, detailed bridal makeup and intricate mehndi, Pathu appeared in a plain maroon cotton saree without necklaces, earrings, bangles or hand henna. Her decision drew particular attention because of her professional background as a makeup and henna artist.
Explaining her choice, Pathu said she wanted to remain true to herself on her wedding day rather than present an image shaped by social expectations or material displays.
Social media users praise simple celebration
Photos and videos from the ceremony quickly spread across Instagram, YouTube and other social media platforms, attracting widespread appreciation from users who viewed the wedding as a refreshing alternative to increasingly expensive celebrations.
Many supporters described her decision as a powerful statement against excessive spending and the growing financial burden associated with Indian weddings, particularly as gold prices continue to rise. Others praised her natural appearance, saying it challenged unrealistic beauty standards often imposed on brides.
Debate grows over tradition and changing values
However, the wedding also generated debate about preserving cultural traditions. While many welcomed the minimalist approach, some critics argued that abandoning customary bridal adornments moved too far away from Kerala’s cultural heritage. Others questioned why only certain traditions were omitted while other ceremonial practices remained unchanged.
The discussion reflects a broader shift in attitudes toward marriage across India. Although minimalist weddings have appeared before, Pathu’s strong online presence has significantly amplified the conversation, encouraging many people to reconsider wedding priorities, financial pressures and the meaning of marriage celebrations in contemporary society.
