Senior Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Munib Akhtar, took oath as the acting chief justice of Pakistan on Monday. He assumed the position during the absence of Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, who is currently abroad.
The oath-taking ceremony took place at the Supreme Court of Pakistanโs Karachi Registry. Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui administered the oath in the presence of senior judicial officials. Moreover, the event was attended by judges from the Supreme Court and the Federal Constitutional Court.
Oath Ceremony Held at Supreme Court Karachi Registry
Several senior judges participated in the ceremony alongside court officials and judicial officers. Members of the Supreme Court staff also attended the event. Furthermore, the gathering reflected the significance of the temporary transition in the country’s highest judicial office.
Following the oath, Justice Munib Akhtar formally assumed acting charge as chief justice. Consequently, he will oversee the responsibilities of the office until the return of Chief Justice Yahya Afridi.
Justice Akhtar to Handle Judicial and Administrative Duties
During his tenure as acting chief justice, Justice Munib Akhtar will perform both judicial and administrative functions. These responsibilities include overseeing court proceedings and managing key administrative matters within the judiciary.
The appointment ensures continuity in the functioning of the Supreme Court during the chief justiceโs absence. Meanwhile, judicial operations are expected to continue without interruption under Justice Akhtarโs leadership.
The ceremony concluded shortly after the oath was administered. As a result, Justice Munib Akhtar officially began serving as acting chief justice of Pakistan, taking charge of the responsibilities associated with the country’s highest judicial office.
