Cabinet Discussion Focuses on Impact of Sanctions and Naval Restrictions
JERUSALEM: Senior figures within Israelโs defense establishment reportedly expressed concern during a recent Security Cabinet meeting following the announcement of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran, arguing that existing economic pressure on Tehran was beginning to yield significant results.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, Israeli ministers were briefed on the condition of Iranโs economy and the effects of measures imposed during the conflict. Officials reportedly told cabinet members that Iran was facing severe economic challenges and that pressure generated by restrictions on trade and maritime activity had intensified internal difficulties.
During the meeting, security officials reportedly described Iran as approaching a critical economic stage, citing mounting strains on key sectors of the economy.
Officials Cite Impact of Naval Restrictions
The discussion focused heavily on measures introduced after US President Donald Trump announced a naval blockade targeting Iran on April 12. Under the operation, the United States military imposed restrictions affecting Iranian ports and maritime activity in the Persian Gulf.
Israeli officials reportedly argued that the restrictions had significantly disrupted economic activity and reduced Tehranโs ability to sustain normal commercial operations.
According to accounts presented during the meeting, officials pointed to shortages of essential goods and medicines, as well as reports of long queues at fuel stations, as indicators of increasing pressure inside the country.
Military Leaders Argue Pressure Was Producing Results
Furthermore, senior military officials reportedly maintained that the ongoing campaign of economic pressure had begun to influence Iranโs strategic calculations.
Participants said Israeli defense representatives argued that continued restrictions could have pushed Tehran into a deeper economic crisis if maintained over a longer period.
According to sources, officials told ministers and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the pressure campaign had weakened Iranโs economic resilience and that extending the measures might have increased the challenges facing the country.
The discussion took place as debate continues over the recently announced US-Iran memorandum, which aims to reduce tensions and establish a framework for future negotiations. While supporters view the agreement as an opportunity for stability, some Israeli officials reportedly believe that sustained economic pressure could have produced additional leverage in dealing with Tehran.
