Court highlights gap between rulings and action
Israelโs High Court has intensified scrutiny of the governmentโs failure to enforce military service obligations on ultra-Orthodox draft evaders, underscoring a widening gap between legal rulings and policy implementation. During Sundayโs hearing, judges expressed frustration as the state struggled to justify delays despite clear directives.
The court had previously ruled in June 2024 that, without a lawful exemption framework, authorities could not continue avoiding the enlistment of yeshiva students. Subsequently, a November 2025 decision required meaningful enforcement. However, judges noted that little progress has been made. Deputy Supreme Court President Noam Sohlberg described enlistment figures as troubling and criticized the continued procedural delays.
Meanwhile, Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs claimed that IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir supported the governmentโs proposed draft plan. In response, the military quickly clarified that Zamir had not endorsed any specific legislation, further highlighting tensions between official narratives and military positions.
Army warns of growing manpower shortage
At the same time, Zamir has repeatedly warned of a severe manpower crisis within the military. In recent statements, he raised multiple concerns about the armyโs operational capacity, cautioning that shortages of combat and support personnel could cause significant harm.
Furthermore, the ongoing conflict has placed immense pressure on reservists, many of whom face repeated deployments, career disruptions, and personal strain. As a result, the burden on active forces has reached unsustainable levels.
Additionally, the debate has taken on greater urgency amid national reflection, emphasizing fairness in sharing defense responsibilities. Analysts argue that continued inaction risks deepening inequality and undermining cohesion.
Ultimately, the government faces mounting pressure to implement reforms, balance political considerations, and address national security needs effectively.
