Islamabad Police has introduced a new social media policy covering officers and personnel across all ranks.
The policy places strict limits on how police employees can use social media platforms.
The new rules cover photographs, videos, public statements and the sharing of departmental information.
They also restrict personnel from expressing personal political or religious views through social media.
The policy, approved by the Inspector General of Islamabad Police, has taken immediate effect.
Police Personnel Barred From Uniform Videos and Photos
Under the new policy, police personnel cannot record videos while wearing their official uniform.
They are also prohibited from having photographs taken in uniform.
Moreover, officers cannot use the police uniform for personal publicity, fame or glamour.
The restrictions also apply to videos recorded inside official vehicles and police offices.
Personnel are additionally barred from recording such videos at private locations while wearing their uniform.
Violations of these restrictions may result in departmental disciplinary action.
Restrictions on Media Statements and Public Views
The policy also introduces restrictions on police personnel speaking publicly without official permission.
Officers and other personnel cannot issue statements to the media without prior approval.
They also require permission before speaking at public forums or writing articles.
In addition, police personnel cannot express personal political or religious views on social media.
The restrictions apply across the department and cover personnel at different ranks.
As a result, individual social media activity will now face closer departmental oversight.
Departmental Documents Cannot Be Shared Online
The new rules also prohibit personnel from posting departmental or classified documents on social media.
Police employees cannot share photographs of such documents through social media platforms either.
Even posts highlighting positive activities of the police department require prior approval.
The policy places this approval responsibility with the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Headquarters.
Therefore, personnel cannot independently publish departmental achievements or activities without receiving the required clearance.
CPO to Manage Release of Police Information
The policy establishes the Central Police Office’s Public Relations Branch as the official channel for police information.
Information concerning police activities will only be released through the CPO Public Relations Branch.
This approach places the responsibility for official communication within a designated departmental channel.
Meanwhile, unit heads will have a direct responsibility for monitoring their staff’s social media activities.
They will therefore be expected to ensure that personnel comply with the newly introduced rules.
Strict Action Ordered Against Policy Violations
Islamabad Police has ordered strict departmental action against personnel who violate the new social media policy.
The disciplinary measures apply to violations of the restrictions introduced under the policy.
The Inspector General of Islamabad Police has approved the policy, which is already in force.
Consequently, police officers and personnel must follow the new requirements while using social media.
The policy covers personal posts, uniform-related content, public statements and departmental information.
It also gives senior officials greater control over the release of information connected with police activities.
With the rules now effective, Islamabad Police personnel face tighter limits on their online activity and public communication.
