Express Entry Remains Key Route for Global Talent
Canada has updated its Express Entry system as the country continues to face skilled labour shortages in major sectors. The system remains one of Canada’s main immigration pathways for skilled professionals seeking permanent residency.
Express Entry is designed to attract workers who can support Canada’s economy. It is especially important for sectors such as healthcare, technology and skilled trades.
The system is managed by the Canadian government. It allows eligible candidates to enter an online pool and compete for invitations to apply for permanent residence.
Canada uses Express Entry to select applicants who have the right education, work experience, language ability and skills. The aim is to bring in professionals who can meet labour market needs and support long-term growth.
How the Express Entry System Works
Candidates begin the process by creating an online profile. They provide details about their age, education, work history and language ability.
Applicants are then ranked through the Comprehensive Ranking System. This system gives points based on several factors. These include age, education, work experience and English or French language skills.
Language ability is measured through the Canadian Language Benchmark. Occupations are assessed through the National Occupation Classification system. Jobs are also grouped under the TEER system, which focuses on training, education, experience and responsibilities.
Canada holds regular invitation rounds. The highest-ranked candidates receive an Invitation to Apply. After receiving the invitation, applicants must submit a complete application, upload documents and pay the required fees.
Three Programs and Updated Fees
Express Entry covers three major immigration programs. The Canadian Experience Class is for skilled workers with eligible work experience in Canada. The Federal Skilled Worker Program is for professionals with Canadian or foreign work experience. The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for qualified workers in selected trade occupations.
Canada also updated Express Entry application fees from April 30, 2026. The fee for the main applicant is $1,590. The spouse fee is also $1,590. The fee for a dependent child is $270.
Processing times can vary by case and program. Applicants may also need biometrics before a final decision is issued.
Successful applicants receive confirmation of permanent residence or landing instructions. This allows them to live and work permanently in Canada.
