Tehran confirms upcoming technical talks with the United States as both sides move to implement interim agreement
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced that $6 billion of the country’s frozen assets held in Qatar will be released following the lifting of oil and petrochemical sanctions under the recently signed interim agreement with the United States.
Speaking to Iranian state media, Pezeshkian said half of the estimated $12 billion in Iranian funds frozen in Qatar would soon return to Tehran as implementation of the agreement moves forward.
The announcement follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States earlier this month, which established a framework for negotiations aimed at resolving longstanding disputes and reducing regional tensions.
Technical negotiations expected in Doha
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue despite recent uncertainty surrounding the talks. Iranian officials had previously warned that technical negotiations could be delayed following recent attacks and what they described as incomplete implementation of commitments outlined in the memorandum.
However, a senior US official said discussions had not been cancelled and confirmed that preparations for the next round of negotiations remain on schedule.
Sources familiar with the matter also said Iranian and American technical teams are expected to meet in Doha in the coming days to discuss implementation measures and address outstanding issues related to the agreement.
Ceasefire supports diplomatic momentum
Separately, US officials said Washington and Tehran have agreed to halt further military attacks while diplomatic channels remain active. According to officials, mediators have established communication mechanisms to help prevent further escalation and support ongoing negotiations.
Officials also indicated that commercial shipping is continuing through regional waterways as both sides work to maintain stability during the negotiation process.
The interim agreement includes provisions covering sanctions relief, technical discussions, and broader negotiations over unresolved issues between the two countries. Diplomatic sources said upcoming meetings in Qatar are expected to focus on implementing agreed measures while maintaining the current reduction in hostilities and advancing efforts toward a more comprehensive settlement.
