Tehran says renewed attacks violate UN Charter and ceasefire memorandum
TEHRAN: Iran has formally asked the United Nations Security Council to take immediate action after accusing the United States of carrying out a new wave of large-scale military strikes against the country, according to a letter submitted by Iranโs Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani.
Addressing the Security Council and UN Secretary-General on Wednesday, Iravani alleged that the latest US military operations constituted a blatant violation of the UN Charter and international law. He argued that the attacks infringed upon Iranโs sovereignty and territorial integrity while breaching commitments made under a Pakistan-mediated Memorandum of Understanding signed last month to halt hostilities.
The letter stated that the United States had repeatedly violated the agreement and therefore bore full legal and political responsibility for the consequences of what Tehran described as unlawful military escalation.
Iran seeks urgent UN intervention
Iranโs envoy called on the Security Council and the UN secretary-general to fulfill their responsibilities under the UN Charter by taking immediate, effective, and decisive measures to halt the reported violations and ensure accountability.
The letter further claimed that continued inaction by the Security Council had encouraged further military action against Iran, warning that such developments undermine the councilโs authority and threaten international peace and security.
Military tensions continue to rise
Earlier on Wednesday, the United States military announced another round of strikes targeting Iranian coastal military sites. In response, Iranโs Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it launched missiles and drones against what it described as 85 US military targets in Bahrain and Kuwait.
Iran condemned the reported US operations in the strongest terms, describing them as evidence of Washingtonโs disregard for its international obligations. Meanwhile, Tehran reiterated that the United States bears full responsibility for all consequences arising from the renewed escalation as tensions continue to challenge the fragile ceasefire agreement.
