Iran has reportedly warned that it may halt its World Cup matches if unauthorized flags are displayed or slogans targeting the national team are chanted inside stadiums. The statement was attributed to Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali, according to Iranian media reports.
The warning comes amid growing criticism and political pressure surrounding Iranโs participation in the tournament, which begins on Thursday.
World Cup Fixtures and Group Stage Schedule
Iran will open its Group G campaign against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15. The team is scheduled to face Belgium at the same venue on June 21.
Their final group-stage match will be played against Egypt in Seattle on June 26, completing a challenging set of fixtures across multiple US cities.
These matches are expected to attract significant attention due to both sporting and political developments surrounding the team.
Official Warning Sent to FIFA
Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali stated that Iran has formally communicated concerns to FIFA regarding stadium conduct.
โWe have informed FIFA that if unofficial flags are brought or slogans against the national team are chanted in the stadiums where Iran plays in the World Cup, the team manager will definitely be responsible for stopping the match,โ he said.
He further added, โWe have been assured that no disruptive incidents will occur in the stadium during the match against Egypt.โ
The statement highlights rising sensitivity around match-day atmosphere and fan behaviour at international venues.
LGBTQ+ Related Concerns and Match Designation
Iran and Egyptโs football associations had previously raised objections with FIFA regarding LGBTQ+ Pride-related activities linked to the Seattle fixture.
The match has been designated by local organisers as part of a โPride Marchโ event aligned with Seattleโs Pride weekend.
This development has intensified diplomatic and cultural tensions around the tournament, especially regarding stadium messaging and public demonstrations.
Protests and Calls for FIFA Action
Earlier in the year, protesters gathered outside a FIFA congress in Vancouver, calling for Iranโs removal from the tournament.
The protestors claimed the national team represents the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps rather than the Iranian people, adding further controversy around the teamโs participation.
These demonstrations reflect broader geopolitical tensions that continue to influence perceptions of the tournament.
Logistical and Travel Challenges for Iran Team
Iranโs football federation has also reported operational difficulties ahead of the competition. According to officials, the teamโs ticket allocation was withdrawn just days before the tournament.
This decision left several supporters unable to attend matches despite having made prior travel arrangements.
The disruption has added further strain on the teamโs preparation and fan engagement efforts.
Security and Travel Arrangements in the United States
The Iranian squad is currently training in Tijuana, Mexico. Authorities have confirmed that the team will be allowed to enter the United States only one day before each match.
The Department of Homeland Security stated that this arrangement is linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions that have added complexity to the tournamentโs logistics.
As the World Cup approaches, Iranโs participation remains under close international scrutiny amid security concerns, political debates, and stadium conduct warnings.
