Foreign Ministers Stress Maritime Security and Regional Stability
MUSCAT: Iran and Oman have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safe and uninterrupted movement of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz following the recently announced memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington.
During a telephone conversation on Tuesday, Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reviewed bilateral relations and discussed regional developments. Both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation across various sectors based on principles of good neighbourliness and their longstanding historical and cultural ties.
According to Omanโs state news agency, the two ministers highlighted their shared commitment to international law and stressed the need to guarantee the safe and free passage of ships through the strategically important waterway.
Diplomatic Momentum Builds After US-Iran Understanding
Meanwhile, the ministers expressed hope that all relevant parties would make serious efforts to create a sustainable environment that supports constructive political dialogue and diplomacy aimed at preserving regional peace, security and stability.
The discussion comes days after the United States and Iran announced a memorandum of understanding designed to pave the way for ending the conflict that began following US and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28.
US President Donald Trump has stated that the understanding has already been signed and that the Strait of Hormuz will be fully reopened by Friday. However, Iranian officials have indicated that the memorandum is expected to be formally signed by representatives of both negotiating teams during a meeting scheduled in Geneva on June 19.
Strategic Waterway Remains Vital for Global Energy Trade
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the worldโs most critical maritime corridors, connecting the Gulf with international waters through the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
As a major route for global energy exports, any improvement in security and navigation conditions is closely monitored by international markets and regional stakeholders.
Consequently, the renewed commitment by Iran and Oman is being viewed as an important step toward restoring confidence in regional maritime trade and promoting long-term stability across the Gulf region.
