Tehran Accuses Washington of Violating Initial Agreement Terms
TEHRAN: Iran has suspended its entire 60-day negotiation framework with the United States after accusing Washington of failing to uphold commitments outlined in the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), according to regional media reports.
Reports from Iranian and regional outlets said Tehran believes Israeli military strikes in southern Lebanon, carried out less than 24 hours after the electronic signing of the agreement, violated the first clause of the MoU, which calls for an end to military operations and de-escalation across multiple fronts.
Iranian officials reportedly argued that the attacks raised serious concerns about the implementation of the agreement and Washingtonโs ability to ensure compliance with its commitments.
As a result, Tehran announced it would pause participation in the negotiation process until it receives assurances that the terms of the agreement are being respected.
Switzerland Talks Reportedly Called Off
According to the reports, Iranโs delegation had been preparing to travel to Switzerland for the first round of negotiations with US officials when the trip was abruptly cancelled.
Officials reportedly decided to suspend their participation after reviewing developments in Lebanon and assessing what they described as a breach of the agreementโs initial provisions.
Furthermore, Iranian representatives indicated that Tehran would not proceed with its own commitments under the framework until it was satisfied that military actions in Lebanon had ceased and that all parties were adhering to the agreed conditions.
The reported decision places the planned diplomatic process in uncertainty and raises questions about the future of the recently announced understanding between Washington and Tehran.
Uncertainty Surrounds Future Diplomatic Efforts
The first round of US-Iran negotiations, which was expected to begin within days, now appears to be on hold pending further developments.
Neither Washington nor Tehran immediately issued detailed official statements regarding the reported suspension. However, the move highlights the fragility of the diplomatic process and the challenges facing efforts to maintain momentum toward a broader agreement.
Analysts say future progress will likely depend on whether both sides can address concerns surrounding regional security commitments and restore confidence in the implementation of the memorandumโs provisions.
