TEHRAN: Iran’s Foreign Ministry said the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United States has entered a “crisis phase,” accusing Washington of violating the agreement before Tehran’s agreed timeframe for implementing key commitments had expired.
Speaking on the latest developments, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said the United States acted prematurely by breaching the understanding before the one-month period granted to Iran for fulfilling its obligations regarding the Strait of Hormuz had concluded.
According to the spokesperson, the agreement outlined a phased implementation process, including commitments linked to maritime security and navigation through the strategic waterway. However, Tehran argued that Washington moved too quickly, undermining the diplomatic framework before the agreed timeline had run its course.
Iran questions future of agreement
The spokesperson said the latest developments have pushed the memorandum into a difficult stage, raising serious questions about its future and the credibility of commitments made under the understanding.
Iran maintained that respecting agreed timelines is essential for preserving trust and ensuring the successful implementation of any negotiated arrangement. Officials argued that unilateral actions before the completion of the agreed schedule risk damaging ongoing diplomatic efforts.
The remarks come amid heightened regional tensions and continued disagreement over the implementation of provisions related to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime corridors.
Diplomatic uncertainty continues
Despite the sharp criticism, Iranian officials have not formally announced their withdrawal from the memorandum, leaving the possibility of further diplomatic engagement open.
The latest statement reflects growing strain between Tehran and Washington as both sides continue to exchange accusations over compliance with the agreement. Analysts say the future of the memorandum will largely depend on whether diplomatic channels remain active and whether both parties can address their differences through negotiations rather than further escalation.
The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the dispute, with both sides offering differing interpretations of their respective obligations under the memorandum.
