Iran has condemned a fresh package of US economic and trade sanctions, calling the measures “economic terrorism” and an attack on the Iranian people.
In a statement Thursday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry described the sanctions as another chapter in decades of hostility by American politicians toward Tehran.
The ministry said the sanctions targeted fundamental rights of Iranian citizens and constituted economic terrorism and a crime against humanity.
Furthermore, it called for the prosecution and punishment of officials responsible for designing and enforcing the measures.
The ministry said Washington imposed the latest sanctions after two “American-Zionist wars on Iran” failed to force Tehran into accepting its demands.
It also described US economic pressure as “the other side of the coin of war” and warned that both tactics threaten global peace.
Meanwhile, Iran vowed to defend its national interests against continued American military, economic, political and psychological pressure.
On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump announced plans for what he called the “most crushing economic operation” against Iran.
Trump said his campaign would target financial channels supporting Tehran and impose severe consequences on countries providing Iran with economic support.
Moreover, he urged US allies to join the campaign, which he described as “Economic D-Day,” to isolate Tehran financially.
