New leak suggests Apple may create a significant camera hardware difference between its upcoming Pro and Pro Max iPhones
Apple could introduce a major camera distinction between the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, potentially changing its long-standing approach of offering nearly identical features across both premium models.
According to prominent leaker Ice Universe, the iPhone 18 Pro Max will exclusively feature a variable-aperture camera. The claim, shared on Chinese social media platform Weibo, contradicts earlier reports suggesting Apple would introduce the technology on both Pro models.
Apple has not confirmed the information, meaning the reported specifications remain subject to change before the expected launch.
Variable Aperture Could Give Pro Max an Edge
A variable aperture allows a camera to physically adjust the amount of light reaching its sensor. Consequently, photographers can gain greater control over exposure and depth of field under different shooting conditions.
If Apple restricts the technology to the Pro Max, buyers choosing the smaller Pro could lose access to a meaningful camera capability rather than simply accepting a smaller display and battery.
However, reports suggest both devices will otherwise remain closely matched. They are expected to feature Appleโs A20 Pro processor, 12GB of memory, a 48-megapixel triple-camera system and storage options reaching 2TB.
Apple Could Revive Camera Differences Between Pro Models
Apple has previously reserved camera upgrades for its largest premium handset. For example, the company initially introduced its 5x telephoto camera exclusively on the iPhone 15 Pro Max before expanding the technology.
Therefore, a Pro Max-exclusive variable aperture would not represent an entirely unprecedented strategy.
Still, the move could signal Appleโs renewed effort to differentiate its two flagship Pro devices through hardware rather than size alone.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max next month, reportedly alongside its first foldable iPhone.
Until Apple officially announces the lineup, however, prospective buyers should treat the variable-aperture exclusivity claim as an unconfirmed leak.
