The Republican-led House passed a major Ukraine aid package despite opposition from President Donald Trump. The legislation gained support from both parties and advanced after months of delays.
Eighteen Republicans joined Democrats and backed the security package in a 226-195 vote. Additionally, California Representative Kevin Kiley supported the measure. Meanwhile, Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar cast the only vote against it.
The bill provides military assistance to Ukraine and expands sanctions against Russia. Furthermore, it seeks to strengthen Ukraineโs defenses amid increasing Russian missile and drone attacks.
Aid Package Advances Despite White House Resistance
The legislation now moves to the Senate, where lawmakers expect a difficult path forward. However, supporters remain hopeful about its chances.
The White House strongly opposed the measure and threatened a presidential veto. Officials argued that the bill could hinder efforts to end the conflict. They also criticized the proposal for creating costly unfunded commitments.
The package authorizes over $1.5 billion in security assistance for Ukraine. In addition, it provides $8 billion in direct loans. The measure also extends a Pentagon weapons procurement program supporting Ukraine.
Moreover, the legislation targets Russiaโs energy revenues and sanctioned business networks. The White House warned that mandatory sanctions could disrupt global economic stability.
Republican Supporters Defend Their Votes
Several Republicans rejected claims that they defied President Trump. Representative Joe Wilson said the legislation aligns with Trumpโs support for Ukraine. He also stressed continued American backing for Ukrainian citizens.
Meanwhile, opponents argued that the bill serves political interests rather than strategic goals. Representative Randy Fine criticized the legislation and questioned its purpose. Representative Clay Higgins also opposed additional funding for Ukraine.
The measure gained momentum after defecting Republicans signed a discharge petition. Consequently, lawmakers forced a floor vote despite objections from House leadership. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries praised the effort and highlighted Democratic persistence.
