Widespread Storms Target the Twin Cities
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast widespread rain and thunderstorms in Islamabad and Rawalpindi over the next two days. Furthermore, meteorologists warned that heavy downpours on Tuesday and Wednesday could cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of both cities.
The department issued a formal weather advisory on Monday afternoon. Consequently, officials urged residents and local authorities to remain highly vigilant throughout the week. The incoming weather system will likely bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and dangerous lightning to the twin cities.
The Complex Meteorology Behind the Downpour
According to the department, moist currents from the Arabian Sea are continuously affecting the upper parts of the country. Meanwhile, moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal are expected to enter northeastern regions from Tuesday evening. A westerly weather system is also set to influence the upper parts of the country, further enhancing rainfall activity.
This atmospheric combination creates a volatile environment. Therefore, torrential downpours remain a distinct possibility for several consecutive hours. The influx of multiple air masses ensures the storm system gathers significant strength as it moves inland.
Regional Impact and Structural Safety Risks
Besides Islamabad and Rawalpindi, rain accompanied by windstorms and thunderstorms is also expected in Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Sahiwal, Okara, Kasur, and several adjoining districts.
The vast geographic scope of this advisory means millions must prepare for sudden weather changes. The PMD warned that strong winds and lightning could damage vulnerable structures, including solar panels, electricity poles, and billboards. Property owners should secure loose outdoor items immediately to minimize potential damage.
Emergency Safety Recommendations for Residents
Urban flooding poses a direct threat to drivers and commuters. Therefore, the department advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall and urged the relevant authorities to take precautionary measures to prevent any untoward incidents.
Fortunately, the intense storm system brings one positive outcome for local residents. It added that the prevailing hot and humid weather is likely to subside as the rain-bearing system moves across the region. Cooler temperatures will offer much-needed relief once the initial risk passes.
