Delhi, Kerala and Maharashtra report casualties while weather officials issue fresh alerts
NEW DELHI: At least four people died after a building collapsed in Indiaโs capital, Delhi, as heavy monsoon rains continued to trigger deadly incidents and disrupt travel across several parts of the country.
According to Indian media, rescue teams pulled one person alive from the debris after the building collapsed. Emergency crews continued search and clearance operations while authorities assessed the safety of nearby structures.
Indiaโs weather department issued a red alert for parts of Delhi and neighbouring Haryana, warning of heavy rainfall and possible further disruption. Meanwhile, Delhi airport advised passengers to leave early because waterlogging on several roads had slowed access to terminals.
Landslides and flooding cause more deaths
In the southern state of Kerala, a landslide in Wayanad killed at least four people on Tuesday, according to local media. Heavy rain has increased the risk of further landslides in hilly areas, prompting authorities to remain on alert.
In Maharashtra, officials said at least 13 people had died in rain-related incidents earlier this week. In Pune, near Mumbai, a large mound of garbage collapsed at a waste treatment facility, trapping several people. Rescue teams saved at least seven people, while nine others were feared trapped.
Travel and daily life disrupted
The monsoon has also caused widespread flooding in several cities. Visuals from Agra showed waterlogged streets, while highways in Gujarat were submerged, forcing residents to move through knee-deep water.
Authorities have urged people in affected areas to avoid unnecessary travel and follow official safety instructions as rainfall continues.
The latest incidents highlight the growing disruption caused by intense monsoon showers, which regularly damage infrastructure, block roads and threaten vulnerable communities across India during the rainy season.
