Senior Cleric Urges Iranians to Avoid Internal Divisions
TEHRAN: Hassan Khomeini, grandson of Islamic Republic founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, has described the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Iran and the United States as a significant victory for Tehran and urged Iranians to maintain unity in the aftermath of the agreement.
In remarks broadcast by state media earlier this week, Khomeini said the country had entered a new phase following the agreement and suggested that greater efforts would now be required to safeguard its achievements.
He called on citizens and political groups to avoid unnecessary disputes, emphasizing that internal divisions could weaken the country at a critical moment. Although he did not identify specific disagreements, his comments came amid ongoing political tensions and debates over the agreementโs implications.
The remarks also follow months of domestic challenges, including economic pressures and political unrest that have tested public confidence and intensified national debate.
Political Debate Continues Over Agreement
Meanwhile, reactions to the MoU remain mixed within Iranโs political landscape. Hardline factions, including members of the Paydari Front, have openly criticized the government for engaging in negotiations with Washington despite terms that many analysts consider favorable to Tehran.
In recent weeks, some demonstrations by hardline supporters have highlighted growing frustration among segments of the political establishment. Critics of the agreement argue that negotiations with the United States compromise core revolutionary principles, while supporters view the arrangement as a pragmatic step toward easing economic and diplomatic pressures.
Economic Pressures Remain a Central Concern
Khomeini also pointed to the challenges Iran faced during the recent period of heightened tensions, including economic restrictions and disruptions affecting trade and energy exports.
He argued that the country demonstrated resilience despite external pressure and credited both state institutions and the Iranian public for enduring difficult conditions.
As debate over the agreement continues, observers say the government faces the challenge of balancing political unity, economic recovery, and public expectations while implementing the terms of the new understanding and navigating an evolving regional environment.
