ISLAMABAD: The federal government has approved revised operating hours for commercial activities across the country, allowing shops, markets, and shopping malls to remain open until 9pm nationwide.
The decision was made during a meeting of the committee responsible for monitoring and implementing austerity measures, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
Under the new schedule, all retail businesses, markets, and shopping centres will be permitted to operate until 9pm. Officials said the adjustment was introduced in response to longer daylight hours and rising temperatures, which have affected public movement and business activity during the day.
In addition, restaurants, cafes, and other food and beverage outlets will now be allowed to remain open until 11pm. Authorities believe the revised timings will help support economic activity while also providing greater convenience to the public.
Meanwhile, the committee clarified that essential services will remain exempt from any time restrictions. Pharmacies, hospitals, petrol pumps, and information technology and telecommunications services will continue operating according to demand without any prescribed closing hours.
However, wedding halls, marquees, and other event venues will not receive any relaxation under the new policy. These facilities will continue to close at 10pm in accordance with existing regulations.
During the meeting, Ishaq Dar directed provincial governments to ensure the effective implementation of the revised business timings. He also stressed the importance of close coordination between federal and provincial authorities to guarantee uniform enforcement across the country.
The decision marks another adjustment in the governmentโs approach to balancing energy conservation measures with commercial and public needs. Officials expressed confidence that the revised schedule would facilitate business operations while maintaining oversight of energy consumption and public service requirements.
The new timings are expected to provide relief to traders and consumers alike, particularly during the summer season when commercial activity often extends into the evening hours.
