PM-Formed Committee Suggests Major Amendments
A committee formed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has proposed major changes to the controversial Telecom Reorganization Amendment Bill.
The bill had faced widespread criticism from citizens, lawmakers and digital rights groups.
The committee was tasked with reviewing the proposed law after concerns were raised over privacy, property rights and telecom infrastructure powers.
According to sources, the committee has already held two meetings to examine the disputed provisions.
Officials said the proposed amendments are aimed at making the bill more public-friendly and legally balanced.
Privacy and Property Rights Under Review
The committee has recommended changes to several controversial clauses.
These include clearer legal definitions and revisions to provisions that had raised concerns over citizensโ privacy.
The panel has also proposed stronger protections for private property.
One of the key recommendations states that private property should only be used for telecom infrastructure with the explicit consent of the property owner.
The committee has also suggested that compensation for use of private property must be decided through mutual agreement between the owner and the telecom company.
This recommendation is expected to address fears that telecom infrastructure could be installed on private land without proper permission.
Fiberization and Telecom Installations Face Fresh Scrutiny
The committee has also recommended a review of clauses related to fiberization and other telecom infrastructure projects.
These include the installation of towers, cables and related equipment on private property.
Sources said the government wants to support digital expansion while protecting citizensโ rights.
The proposed changes are expected to reduce public concerns and improve confidence in the legislation.
Officials said the final version of the bill will likely reflect a more balanced approach between telecom development and public safeguards.
The government is expected to review the committeeโs recommendations before moving forward with the amended bill.
