Decision Expected to Save Businesses More Than Rs500 Million
KARACHI: The federal government has suspended a proposed 5% increase in Karachi Port Trust (KPT) tariffs for the fiscal year 2026-27, aiming to ease financial pressure on businesses and strengthen trade activity across the country.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced the decision on Thursday, stating that maintaining existing port charges will provide relief exceeding Rs500 million to importers, exporters and consumers.
According to the minister, the move aligns with the government’s broader economic strategy of reducing business costs, supporting exports and encouraging commercial growth during a challenging economic period.
He emphasized that ports remain a critical component of Pakistanโs economy and that any rise in port-related charges directly increases the cost of doing business. Consequently, the government decided to suspend the planned tariff adjustment to protect economic activity and maintain competitiveness.
Focus on Business Facilitation and Economic Growth
Furthermore, Chaudhry said the decision supports the Prime Ministerโs Blue Economy Vision, which seeks to promote maritime development, trade expansion and investment opportunities.
By keeping tariffs unchanged, authorities aim to facilitate the business community and encourage greater use of port facilities. The minister noted that exporters will benefit from lower operational costs, helping Pakistani products remain competitive in international markets.
At the same time, importers will avoid additional expenses that could otherwise increase the cost of goods entering the country.
Trade Sector Expected to Benefit
Meanwhile, government officials believe the measure will contribute positively to national economic activity by improving the trading environment and supporting supply chains.
The minister expressed confidence that the decision will encourage higher trade volumes, strengthen export performance and provide meaningful support to businesses operating through Pakistanโs largest maritime gateway.
Additionally, he said the government remains committed to implementing policies that promote economic stability, attract investment and improve the efficiency of the countryโs maritime sector.
Officials expect the move to boost confidence among traders and contribute to sustained growth in Pakistanโs trade and logistics industries in the coming fiscal year.
