Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf was re-elected as speaker of Iran’s parliament on Monday, securing the position for a seventh consecutive term following a vote in the Islamic Consultative Assembly.
During elections for the presiding board of the parliament’s third legislative year, Ghalibaf won 235 votes out of 271 ballots cast, according to Iranian media reports.
His opponents, Mohammad Taqian Naqdali and Osman Salari, received 29 and 7 votes, respectively.
Meanwhile, lawmakers also recorded five blank ballots, while a total of 276 voting cards were distributed among members of parliament.
The election also introduced a notable procedural change. For the first time, lawmakers used direct electronic voting boxes instead of the traditional paper ballot system previously used in speaker elections.
Ghalibaf’s re-election extends his leadership over the Islamic Consultative Assembly at a key political moment for Iran, as the country continues to navigate domestic and regional challenges.
His decisive victory reflects strong support within parliament and ensures continuity in the legislative leadership for the coming year.
