Summit Focus Shifts to Regional Stability and Economic Challenges
EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France: Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations convened in France on Monday amid renewed optimism following reports that the United States and Iran had reached a preliminary framework aimed at ending months of conflict in the Gulf region.
The three-day summit, running from June 15 to 17, is expected to focus heavily on the evolving situation in the Middle East. However, leaders will also discuss the war in Ukraine, global economic imbalances, supply chain resilience, and efforts to secure critical minerals from sources beyond China.
US President Donald Trump arrived in France to participate in the gathering and hold meetings with regional leaders. He is also scheduled to attend discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later during the summit.
Meanwhile, European leaders are seeking greater clarity regarding the reported US-Iran understanding and its implications for regional security and global trade.
Iran Agreement Dominates Early Discussions
According to officials, a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran is expected to be formally signed later this week in Switzerland.
Reports indicate that the framework could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the easing of restrictions affecting maritime trade in the Gulf. Iranian officials have also suggested that military operations across multiple fronts, including Lebanon, could cease under the arrangement.
Furthermore, negotiators are expected to continue discussions over sanctions relief and nuclear-related issues during a proposed 60-day ceasefire period.
Economic Stability and Global Cooperation in Focus
The prospect of reduced tensions contributed to a strong rally in Asian markets and renewed investor confidence worldwide.
French President Emmanuel Macron is using the summit to encourage cooperation on global economic challenges, including trade imbalances and investment gaps. He has urged major economies to pursue policies that promote sustainable growth and reduce dependence on concentrated supply chains.
Additionally, leaders from Brazil, India, Kenya, South Korea, and several Middle Eastern countries have been invited to participate in discussions aimed at strengthening international cooperation and addressing emerging global challenges.
