Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb has briefed senior International Monetary Fund (IMF) officials on Pakistan’s improving economic situation. He highlighted progress in fiscal management, external account stability, revenue collection, foreign exchange reserves, and record remittance inflows.
The finance minister shared these updates during a series of meetings with senior IMF leadership. The discussions focused on Pakistan’s ongoing economic reform programme and future growth strategy.
Pakistan Highlights Economic Improvements Before IMF
Aurangzeb met with senior IMF officials, including First Deputy Managing Directors Dan Katz and Gita Gopinath, Deputy Managing Director Nigel Clarke, and Middle East and Central Asia Department Director Jihad Azour.
He also held discussions with Pakistan’s IMF Mission Chief Eva Petrenko. The meetings covered Pakistan’s macroeconomic performance, the Extended Fund Facility (EFF), and the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF).
During the talks, Aurangzeb highlighted improvements in Pakistan’s fiscal position and external accounts. He also discussed the government’s achievement of revenue targets and stronger foreign exchange reserves.
Furthermore, the minister pointed towards record remittances and improvements in the current account position. He said these developments reflected progress under the economic reform agenda.
IMF Discussions Cover Key Economic Reforms
The meetings also focused on several important reform areas. These included tax reforms, energy sector improvements, privatization, tariff adjustments, and debt management.
Both sides discussed ways to diversify financing sources and support Pakistan’s return to international capital markets.
Additionally, discussions covered human capital development, greater economic participation for women, population challenges, and technology-based growth.
The finance minister emphasized the need for an export-focused growth model led by the private sector. He also thanked IMF officials for their continued support during Pakistan’s reform journey.
Aurangzeb reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining fiscal discipline, strengthening policy credibility, and implementing structural reforms for long-term economic development.
US Appreciates Pakistan’s Economic Reforms
Earlier, the United States also acknowledged Pakistan’s progress toward economic stability and reform implementation.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent appreciated Pakistan’s efforts following his meeting with Finance Minister Aurangzeb in Washington. He highlighted the importance of maintaining reform momentum to achieve sustainable economic growth.
The two officials also discussed measures to support Pakistan’s successful return to international capital markets.
The latest discussions with the IMF and US officials reflect Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to improve economic stability, attract investment, and strengthen financial confidence among international partners.
