Electricity consumers across Pakistan may face another increase in power bills. The Central Power Purchasing Agency has submitted a fuel adjustment request.
The request has been filed with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority. It relates to the fuel cost variation for April.
Proposed Increase in Electricity Charges
The CPPA has requested an increase of Rs1.72 per unit. This adjustment applies under the fuel cost adjustment mechanism.
This mechanism allows changes in electricity prices based on monthly fuel costs. It is applied after actual generation data is finalized.
If approved, the increase will affect all consumers across Pakistan. This includes all Distribution Companies, commonly known as DISCOs. It will also apply to K-Electric consumers in Karachi.
NEPRA Hearing Scheduled for Decision
NEPRA has scheduled a public hearing for June 2. The authority will review the CPPA petition during this session.
The final decision will determine whether the tariff increase is approved. Consumers will only see changes after regulatory clearance.
Electricity Generation Mix for April
The CPPA has shared detailed data on electricity generation sources. Nuclear power remained the largest contributor during April. It accounted for 22.07 percent of total generation.
Hydel power followed closely with 21.89 percent. Local coal contributed 15.61 percent to electricity production.
Imported coal added 14.14 percent to the energy mix. Local gas contributed 10.49 percent, while furnace oil stood at 5.11 percent.
RLNG supplied 4 percent of electricity generation. Solar energy contributed a smaller share at 1.17 percent.
Transmission losses were recorded at 1.95 percent during the month. This reflects the technical loss in the distribution system.
Rising Cost Pressure on Consumers
Electricity consumers are already facing high base tariffs. At the same time, subsidy reductions are adding more pressure.
Households with multiple meters may also see reduced support in future billing cycles. This adds further financial strain on users.
As a result, the overall cost of electricity continues to rise. Summer demand may increase this burden further.
Conclusion
The proposed Rs1.72 per unit increase reflects fuel cost changes for April. The final decision now depends on NEPRAโs upcoming hearing.
If approved, the adjustment will impact millions of electricity users nationwide.
