ISLAMABAD: Electricity consumers may face an additional burden of around Rs2.50 per unit after the CPPA sought recovery of more than Rs34 billion.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency filed the request under the July 2026 monthly Fuel Charges Adjustment.
Nepra will hear the application on August 27, 2026. The regulator will review power purchase and generation costs before announcing its decision.
Higher Demand Drives Proposed Increase
The proposed adjustment could affect consumers of distribution companies, commonly known as Discos, and K-Electric consumers.
Sources said higher electricity consumption during the peak summer season largely drove the expected positive Fuel Charges Adjustment.
Moreover, power producers relied more heavily on expensive generation sources to meet increased electricity demand.
The use of liquefied natural gas from the spot market also contributed to higher generation costs. In addition, power plants used furnace oil during periods of peak demand.
Consequently, the overall fuel cost for electricity generation increased during July.
Consumers Await Nepra Decision
Nepra will now examine the CPPA application and determine the final Fuel Charges Adjustment for July 2026.
If the regulator approves the proposed increase, consumers could face an additional burden estimated at around Rs41 billion.
However, Nepra may revise the requested adjustment after reviewing the submitted data and applicable generation costs.
The final decision will determine the exact additional amount consumers will pay through their electricity bills.
