ISLAMABAD: Following the federal government’s announcement of a reduction in electricity rates this April, power authorities are poised to offer further relief to consumers next month with lower electricity bills.
As per a statement released by the Ministry of Power Division, a petition has been submitted to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) requesting a reduction in fuel cost adjustment from Rs2.94 to Rs4.92 per unit for May, compared to April.
Consumers can expect a reduction of Rs4.12 per unit in their electricity bills for May compared to March. Additionally, the statement notes that the power tariff for April was also decreased from Rs4.92 to Rs7.6 per unit compared to March.
The government’s consistent efforts have led to the submission of a request for a reduction in electricity bills to Nepra for the third consecutive month.
Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Energy Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari has assured that the benefits of the reduction in fuel prices will be passed on to the masses.
In a significant relief for those grappling with inflation, Leghari announced earlier this month that electricity prices for April’s power bills have decreased compared to the previous month.
“The per unit price of electricity dropped by Rs3.83 in April, attributed to quarterly and fuel price adjustments in dollar terms,” Leghari stated in a recent announcement.
He further detailed that the fuel price adjustment for April has decreased to Rs4.92 from Rs7.6, and the quarterly adjustment has reduced to Rs2.75 from Rs4.43, resulting in a decline of Rs1.68 in electricity bills.
Leghari explained the methodology behind calculating electricity prices, stating that the fuel price adjustment assesses the cost incurred in generating power each month. Nepra sets a “reference tariff” for 12 months at the beginning of the year and adjusts fuel prices monthly.
According to Leghari, if there’s an increase in fuel expenditures for electricity generation, failing to charge consumers the additional amount would lead to losses for the national exchequer.
