Pakistanโs Economic Survey is scheduled to be presented on Thursday, marking a key step toward the Federal Budget 2026โ27. The announcement was made by Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb during a Senate session.
The survey is considered a pre-budget document that provides a detailed overview of the countryโs economic performance over the past fiscal year. It outlines major indicators such as GDP growth, tax revenue collection, industrial performance, and broader macroeconomic trends.
This document plays an important role in shaping budget expectations and guiding fiscal policy discussions in parliament.
Overview of Economic Performance Indicators
The Economic Survey will present a comprehensive assessment of Pakistanโs economic condition. It will include sector-wise performance across agriculture, industry, and services, along with fiscal data and revenue trends.
Officials say the report will also highlight key economic challenges and progress made during the outgoing financial year. In addition, it will serve as the foundation for upcoming budget decisions.
Parliamentary Debate on Fuel Prices and Subsidies
During the Senate session, lawmakers also discussed rising petrol prices and government fuel policies. One senator criticized the reported 200% increase in petrol prices, raising concerns about inflation and public hardship.
He argued that although reductions were made in jet fuel prices, ordinary consumers did not receive similar relief. He also questioned the use of petroleum levy revenues and overall fiscal management.
Responding to the debate, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said the economic impact of the ongoing Middle East conflict has continued longer than initially expected. He noted that the situation has remained active for more than three months, affecting financial stability and planning.
Government Response on Subsidy Measures
The finance minister explained that the government initially planned to pass on fuel price changes directly to consumers. However, it later introduced subsidies worth Rs129 billion over a three-week period to provide relief.
He added that these subsidies were financed through cuts in the Public Sector Development Programme. According to him, Rs5.4 billion has already been disbursed, including targeted support for 800,000 motorcycle users and over Rs4 billion allocated to farmers.
He further stated that even if geopolitical tensions ease, their economic consequences may continue into the next fiscal year.
Revenue Targets and Fiscal Strategy
Aurangzeb also informed lawmakers that Pakistan is targeting Rs13 trillion in revenue for the current fiscal year. He highlighted that the government managed post-flood losses through domestic resources, without making international appeals as in 2022.
He emphasized that the petroleum levy remains a consistent part of Pakistanโs fiscal framework and continues to support broader financial commitments.
Budget 2026โ27 Schedule and Parliamentary Plan
The Federal Budget for fiscal year 2026โ27 is now expected to be presented on June 12 in the National Assembly. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry confirmed the revised date, noting that it reflects recent adjustments after consultations.
Earlier, the budget presentation had been shifted multiple times, first from June 5 and then from June 10, due to ongoing discussions within the ruling coalition.
Continuous Budget Session Planned
Parliamentary leaders met in Islamabad under the chairmanship of National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq to finalize arrangements for the upcoming budget session.
Officials indicated that the budget session is expected to continue without interruption from June 12 until final approval. No weekly holidays, including weekends, are planned during this period.
Sources further said that the government aims to complete the budget approval process before Ashura, targeting completion by June 23 or 24.
If delays occur, the session will continue without breaks except for Ashura, while supplementary grants will be reviewed afterward.
Conclusion
The upcoming presentation of the Economic Survey sets the stage for Pakistanโs Budget 2026โ27. With rising fiscal pressures, subsidy debates, and ambitious revenue targets, the government faces a critical period of economic decision-making that will shape the countryโs financial direction in the coming year.
