ISLAMABAD: Pakistan faces floods threat amid the fresh spell of monsoon in the country which will continue till September 17.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) today issued a flood alert for several parts of Pakistan as rainfall is expected to continue for two more days.
The authority warned that heavy rain could trigger flash floods and increase water flows in rivers and streams across northern and western areas.
Flood Risk Increases Across Several Regions
The NDMA identified several vulnerable areas in Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Balochistan.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, Gilgit, Diamer, Ghizer, Ashkoman, Gupis-Yasin, Nagar, Hunza, Shimshal, Skardu and Shigar face flash-flood risks.
Meanwhile, Upper Dir, Swat, Bajaur, Malakand, Kurram, Kohistan, Mohmand and Orakzai could also experience flooding.
In Balochistan, Zhob, Sherani and Musakhel remain vulnerable, while Islamabad and several Punjab districts face possible urban flooding.
The Punjab districts include Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh and Sheikhupura.
The NDMA said it had alerted relevant institutions and directed them to prepare for possible flooding.
Its National Emergencies Operation Centre is conducting risk assessments and issuing timely warnings to the public and concerned departments.
The authority advised people to avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges, rainwater channels and low-lying passages during heavy rainfall.
It also urged citizens to use the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert app for verified weather updates and safety guidance.
PM Shehbaz Orders Enhanced Relief Preparations
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed the NDMA to use all available resources to assist people affected by heavy rain and possible flooding.
During a meeting with NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik in Islamabad, the prime minister reviewed preparations for the monsoon weather.
He directed relevant departments to keep link roads and bridges operational and improve coordination for delivering relief supplies.
PM Shehbaz also ordered stronger coordination between the NDMA, provincial authorities and Provincial Disaster Management Authorities.
The NDMA chairman briefed the meeting on the expected monsoon pattern and preparations undertaken with provincial administrations and other institutions.
He said advance preparations had helped authorities monitor weather conditions and improve their response.
The meeting was informed that relevant institutions nationwide remained prepared for rescue and relief operations during emergencies.
